Recycling & Trash Collection

Hazardous Waste Collection

The City of Portage does not accept hazardous materials in trash or recycling. However, the Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District offers annual hazardous material collection events at Portage High School and regular disposal at their facilities.

Trash Collection

  • On your scheduled residential trash collection day, place your totes at the road side by 6 am. Tote carts must be three feet apart and the directional arrow should point toward the street.
  • Do not place trash bags on top of the toter.
  • Avoid placing your toters within three feet of any objects, including vehicles and mail boxes.
  • Do not lean items against the toter. This will interfere with our automated system.
  • Electronic waste must be placed at the curbside as a bulk item the first week of each calendar month on your regular collection day.

When taking out the trash, remember to park it, point it, space it
